Designing my resume

DESIGN THINKING

Research and design thinking principles to design my UX resume.

WHY IS THIS ON MY PORTFOLIO?

The purpose is not to simply add another project in my work list.

This is to demonstrate how deeply is design thinking involved at solving problems in different aspects on life.

PROCESS

RESEARCH

I was conducting a research for my project called UXpal- a mobile app which helps UX entrants with their journey. I decided to frame the questions in such a way that the research could be used for two of my projects, the second one being my resume.

  • Conducted quantitative research through google forms.

  • Qualitative research was conducted through personalized feedback and the semi open ended questionnaire of the forms.

  • Insights from these helped me to design structural, content aspects of the resume.

EMPATHIZE

User Persona

Defining the problem statement:

To help recruiters get the most relevant, impressive information quickly and provide them with lucrative information which they usually don't find in a resume yet actively or passively wish to see.

User Point of Views (POV):

  • To find relevant information quickly.

  • To find social media or contact information.

  • Is it someone with a knowledge of the bigger picture?

  • How to find someone who is different than the usual lot?

How do I questions which I asked from myself, like:

  • How do I show my soft skills?

  • How do I show what makes me different?

  • How do I prove my design expertise?

  • How do I show empathy and other needed traits?

IDEATE

Brainstorming Sketches were an initial outcome to help give ideas more structure.

DRAFTS

Several versions of the resume draft were prepared on the basis of testing feedback. Some of the majorly different ones are:

TEST

  • Drafts were sent to fellow students in technology, design professionals who I know personally and few others who I got in touch with through LinkedIn and Slack.

  • Iterative changes were made to the drafts based out of feedback.

  • Final reviews were collected through a Google form.

SOME DESIGN DECISIONS

Many decisions were taken to get to the last iteration shown below:

  • Initially I put a heading by the name of "X factor" to show my differentiating traits. It is now "soft skills" as many users did not get the meaning at an instant.

  • Non design experiences like in technology and collaboration have been displayed to show that applicant gets the bigger picture.

  • High school education was removed as with multiple higher education, it is not needed to be mentioned.

  • My picture and a quote which were included earlier have been removed to add minimalism.

REFLECTION OVER LEARNING

  • I was able to learn the limitations and strengths of quantitative analysis through this study.

  • I was able to learn how to coherently conduct quantitative, qualitative user research and other needed research for a project.

  • I was able to apply basic level information architecture and content strategy.
